Boost Winter Wheat Yield: 2025 Montana Bio-Gel® Trial Results

In a 2025 on-farm trial near Kremlin, Montana, early-season responses of Hard Red Spring Wheat (Dagmar, 68 lbs/acre) were evaluated using two dry fertilizers: TerraNu® (custom 7-19-10) and Simplot’s 40 Rock, each applied at 50 lbs per acre. Both fertilizers were tested with and without Bio-Gel®, a highly effective nutrient retention agent and biostimulant, applied at 1 lb per acre. On May 17, all plots received a uniform application of UAN 32% (13 gallons/acre) via streamer bar, with Bio-Gel tank-mixed with UAN in select treatments.

NDVI readings on May 9th revealed significantly stronger early canopy growth and vigor in TerraNu plots versus 40 Rock™, confirmed by field observations of faster emergence and more uniform stands. Following the UAN application, NDVI increased across all treatments, but the most pronounced improvements were in plots where Bio-Gel was tank-mixed directly with UAN. This combination significantly enhanced nitrogen assimilation and uptake, improving nutrient efficiency and promoting sustained early vegetative growth.

In addition to its effectiveness as a tank mix additive with UAN, Bio-Gel’s true strength lies in its use as a dry fertilizer coating for fall-applied phosphorus and potassium blends in winter wheat. Applied at 1 lb per acre, Bio-Gel improves soil moisture retention around fertilizer granules, boosting nutrient availability and supporting stronger seedling establishment. This is especially important for dryland growers in northern Montana and similar environments.

Stronger Wheat Startes with Bio-Gel + TerraNu

  • TerraNu delivered superior early growth and NDVI compared to 40 Rock, especially when paired with Bio-Gel-enhanced UAN.
  • Bio-Gel tank-mixed with UAN at 1 lb/acre greatly improves nitrogen uptake and assimilation, driving better early-season vigor.
  • Most importantly, applying Bio-Gel as a dry coating at 1 lb/acre on fall-applied phosphorus and potassium fertilizers enhances soil moisture retention, nutrient efficiency, and winter wheat establishment.
  • Growers in northern Montana and similar dryland areas should strongly adopt Bio-Gel both as a dry fertilizer coating in the fall and as a tank mix additive with UAN to maximize winter wheat resilience and yield potential.

This integrated fertility approach — combining balanced nutrients, an effective biostimulant, and precision nitrogen application — delivers measurable, sustainable benefits for wheat production under challenging conditions.

Maximize Winter Wheat Performance with Bio-Gel

A 2025 trial near Kremlin, Montana, showed that Bio-Gel delivers real results for Hard Red Spring Wheat when used both as a tank mix additive with UAN and as a dry fertilizer coating.

  • Tank Mix with UAN: Applying Bio-Gel at 1 lb/acre with UAN 32% boosts nitrogen assimilation and uptake, driving stronger early-season growth and higher NDVI compared to nitrogen alone.
  • Dry Fertilizer Coating: Coating fall-applied phosphorus and potassium blends with Bio-Gel at 1 lb/acre improves soil moisture retention around fertilizer granules, enhancing nutrient availability and promoting robust winter wheat seedling establishment—critical for success in dryland environments like northern Montana.

From Insight to Action

Incorporate Bio-Gel into your fertility program today—use it as a dry coating on fall P and K fertilizers and as a tank mix additive with your spring nitrogen application. This dual-use strategy maximizes nutrient efficiency, supports vigorous early growth, and improves winter wheat resilience and yield potential.
