Unlocking Soil Health: The Powerful Origin of Bio-Cal®
Bio-Cal® is a calcium-based soil amendment. It is a high soluble formula that enhances crop performance and optimizes manure efficiency in the first year. Acting as a catalyst in soil fertility programs, Bio-Cal helps mobilize nutrients, unlock soil potential, and promote healthier, stronger plants all season long. As the first specialized fertilizer-grade calcium in its category, Bio-Cal balances soil pH, improves soil structure, and enhances root development. Especially effective in soils with low calcium levels or high potassium or magnesium levels, Bio-Cal maximizes farm productivity and supports long-term soil health.
1 – The Best Source of Available Calcium for Healthier Plants and Higher Yields
Bio-Cal provides higher levels of soluble calcium than many other products. Bio-Cal has 120 pounds of soluble calcium per ton while materials such as dolomitic and calcitic lime have varying amounts of soluble calcium, often as little as 1-2 pounds per ton. Multiple forms of calcium are present in Bio-Cal®, providing both highly available and slow-release calcium. These include calcium oxide and calcium carbonate.
When you talk about other slow-release forms of calcium (ag lime) it may take upwards of 5+ years to get your full return.
2 – Boost Plant Health with Bio-Cal: The Key to Stronger, Healthier Crops
In 2024, we selected 34 Bio-Cal experimental sites, which included 54 soil types among forages and row crops. These sites included manure and dry fertilizer nutrient management systems with a mean application rate of 500 pounds per ace Bio-Cal. Specifically, we note reported changes in Calcium and pH when treated with Bio-Cal vs. Cal-Sul, and in micronutrient availability when treated with Bio-Cal versus Cal-Sul.
3 – Enhance Nutrient Use Efficiency for Healthier, More Productive Crops
Soluble sulfur is a vital macronutrient and should be added to fertilizer programs every growing season. Soluble sulfur is critical in nitrogen usage and building complete proteins. Bio-Cal increased available and soluble sulfur pools 20% and 28%, which suggests there is an enhancement in the biochemical cycling of soil sulfur. With Bio-Cal improving sulfur availability, farmers can reduce their spending on annual sulfur inputs, optimizing their nutrient management strategy.
4 – Improve Soil Flocculation for Better Water Retention and Root Health
Improving soil flocculation or structure allows for increased water infiltration, as well as better root formation. In a multi-year trial set up in a no-till farming system, evidence of compaction was evident from multiple years of repeated traction on the soil profile with no change to the structure with various farming correctives (i.e. tillage). Bio-Cal was introduced into the farming system in the fall of 2022 and has decreased soil compaction by 19% or 44 PSI where applied.
5 – Optimize Calcium (Ca) to Magnesium (Mg) Ratio for Healthier, More Productive Soil
In soils Bio-Cal accounted for a 32% reduction in soil magnesium levels out of 90% of soil samples collected during the 2024 growing season, which equates to 386 lbs/ac of Mg that was impacted.
